Strategies That Promote Balance to Your Work-Personal Life

You are not alone if you feel that both your work and personal life are out of “whack” for lack of a better word. Many professionals struggle to find balance and often think that there’s either not enough hours in a day or find it increasingly difficult to switch off, and priorities what’s important to them. Being a Chiropractor in Elizabeth City, NC since 2001 and running a busy practice I can attest to this.

Striking the right balance not only improves your overall health and general well-being, but it can also boost your morale, even lead to improved performance at work. But why is it such as struggle?  Why are many people terrified of taking much-needed time off work to spend some personal time. Most people will say that they can’t due to mountains of work piling up, others well, they probably aren’t too happy at home, therefore, they would rather spend most of their time at work.

With the constant rise of “always on” work culture, some people claim working long hours are necessary, while 94% of professionals manage to put in 50+ hours a week according to Havard Business School Survey. But did you know that once you have exceeded a certain threshold of working hours, you more likely to either hate your job or personal lives because you are always stressed-out and depressed from the hard commute or trying to get everything done in minimal productive time?

Needless to say, the workforce in 2020 is going to be made up of different generations, and companies need to come up with innovative strategies when it comes to the way employees work and live. If you are struggling to find the balance between work and play, put these strategies in action:

Companies can do their part to support employees by providing them with flexible working hours and appropriate technology. This has been shown to significantly increase job satisfaction, productivity, and lead to higher motivation.

In order to increase employee retention and boost a company’s reputation, a good employer should also support his or her employees’ family time and even encourage them to take their annual leave.

As an employee, learn to separate your work and leave it where it’s meant to be when at home. It all begins with knowing your life purpose, and by so doing, you will not only be clear on where you would rather spend your time and energy, but you will also increase your confidence and feel more fulfilled in your overall life.

An over-reliance on technology during your personal time or spending too much time on the Internet, can create “emotional clutter”, which is the last thing you need. Therefore, the best thing to do is de-clutter your life, be it physical clutter, turning off the news, limited social media or removing toxic people because such things only drain your energy and keep you from thinking clearly.

You should also consider making a list of all your ongoing commitments and rank them in terms of importance and clearing out the unimportant will help you find balance in your work and life.
